Playing our Part with Excellence and Joy

I wake up at 4:15 a.m. three days a week to go swim before I begin my day.  There are a few things that are less than fun about 4:15 a.m. (even for a morning person).  First of all, I am almost 45-years-old with five children still at home.  I am tired at 4:15.  Secondly, toilet seats are very cold in the winter time at 4:15 a.m.  The car is too.

And sometimes, there are bad surprises waiting for me at 4:15 a.m.  You know, those things that sneak in under the radar while we are sleeping.  A week ago, 4:15 a.m. gave me the surprise of a broken heater on a day when the temperature hovered around 20 degrees.

Then there are the e-mails that come in over night.  This morning, there was an e-mail that alerted me to the fact my Pinterest account had activity I didn’t recognize.  When I went over to check it out, I found I had been hacked.  Someone hacked my Pinterest account.

People do that?  I thought.  People hack Pinterest?

I wondered for a moment if it was the same person who hacked my Twitter account last month.

They really need to get bigger fish to fry.  I thought.  I have a total of twelve followers of Pinterest.  Twelve.  I think I have a whopping three followers on Twitter.  Someone is doing a lot of hacking for nothing.

Then I thought how amazingly brilliant hackers are. These are gifted individuals, you know?  Can you imagine if every hacker in the world, from the small time hacker working out my Pinterest password to the big hitters who create devastating computer viruses, all used that genius for good?  I wonder what problems they would solve, what inventions they would create, what sufferings they would alleviate?

But isn’t that true for all of us?  We each were born with a purpose, each empowered with a gift all our own.  I truly believe that no one else can play our part in the great symphony of life. May we each honor The Gift Giver today by playing our part with excellence and joy for the glory of God and the greater good of our fellow man.

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.- Romans 12:6a
